Inspiring Your Future Through Sport

Premier League 4 Sport

The Premier League and Sport England have joined forces in a unique partnership to boost sports participation. The expansion of the successful PL4Sport programme originally set up in 2009 as a contribution to the Government and London 2012 Olympic Legacy programme will see 34 professional clubs create 590 satellite sports clubs where tens of thousands of young people will enjoy 12 different sports. The programme will also train 1,500 volunteers, deliver 450 competitions and see 2,500 sports qualifications gained. Sheffield United and the Community Foundation are proud to be a part of this scheme.

The programme will engage youngsters from some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities with clubs acting as hubs linked to community sports clubs and facilities, which in turn are connected to satellite clubs which take place in local secondary schools, youth clubs and community sport facilities.

Each of the clubs involved has a dedicated PL4S coordinator working locally with the sports clubs, community groups and schools to maximise opportunities for young people. The Community Foundation’s Rachel Charles will be taking this role.

The three key aims of PL4S are:

Engage – get young people to try a sport for a first time
Retain – develop interest in repeat participation, and ensure participants take part in five or more sports sessions in one term
Sustain – make a commitment to competition and coaching qualifications, and ensure that participants take part in ten or more sessions across two terms.

The Premier League invited four new sports to join the programme from 2013 so athletics, boxing, golf and tennis will hope to replicate the success already experienced by badminton, judo, table tennis, volleyball, netball, hockey, handball, and basketball.

Richard Scudamore, the Chief Executive of the Premier League said: “Our clubs have a fantastic track record in terms of investing in and committing to a wide range of good-cause and grass-roots initiatives. Premier League 4 Sport is a key part of our Creating Chances programme and is focussed on sports participation – it is a hugely successful example of that and has benefitted thousands of young people in recent years. The increased investment announced today, along with the expertise brought in by our new partner Sport England, provides our clubs with the opportunity to take these projects to the next level and get more young people playing sport across the country.”
